Market integration of renewable electricity generation requires flexible markets, both on the supply and demand side” (Energy Union, 2015).

Following the transition towards an EU low emission economy, the role of thermal power plants in the energy mix will evolve to become a flexible back-up, complementing the intermittent renewable energy sources and guaranteeing a continuous energy supply.

Investments in new technology will allow power plants of the future to adapt to new requirements and keep technological leadership in Europe.

Michael Ladwig, Vice-President of EUTurbines, explained how this new technology offers a solution to the future energy mix in a fully integrated European electricity market as well as reflected on the sector’s challenges ahead and the conditions needed for its success.
