Renewable energy sources are a fast growing economic sector. Renewable energy technologies are well suited to reduce the dependence on energy imports, thereby offering answers to security of supply issues.

Renewable sources of energy are also a vital element of sustainable development. Furthermore they can help to improve industrial competitiveness and have a positive impact on regional development and employment. The European renewable energy industry has already reached today a turnover of €15 billion.

Europe is the global leader of renewable energy technologies. This positive development within the European Union was substantially stimulated by a proactive and supportive legislative framework, which provides the right conditions for the industry to grow.

Professor Arthouros Zervos, President of the European Renewable Energy Council, the umbrella organisation of the sectorial European renewable energy industry, trade and research associations covering all sectors from wind, PV, small hydro, biomasss, solar thermal to geothermal energy, gave an outline of the development of renewable energy. He also pointed out challenges for the future.
