The wider availability of resources, improved transport technology and geopolitics are transforming the natural gas market from regional to global. This transformation may have a profound impact on Europe’s supply routes and the relations with its traditional suppliers.

Recent natural gas discoveries in Israel, Cyprus and Egypt have the potential to create a vast, new energy hub in Europe’s immediate neighbourhood, thereby further contributing to the diversification of Europe’s imports.

In the context of the recently published Commission’s legislative proposal on security of gas supply, Francesco Giunti, Executive Vice-President and Portfolio, Market & Risk Strategy Director at Eni discussed the potential benefits and challenges of this new gas market paradigm for Europe. The presentation was complemented by an intervention from Stefan Moser, Head of Unit Security of Supply at DG ENER, and an exchange of views with all participants.
