The advisor will be fully allocated to ESMIG, an association that supports the roll-out of Smart Meters in Europe (see description below). ESMIG is a growing organisation with currently 37 members, and has a strong position in the discussions at European level related to legal, technical consumer and energy efficiency aspects of smart metering.
We are looking for a person with a minimum of 5 years' experience working in or with European Union institutions in Brussels, primarily the Commission and Parliament. The focus of the role will be the lobbying of these institutions, and therefore strong capabilities for building and maintaining relations on political level are important. A strong understanding of the energy industry at European level is essential; a recognition of the key role of smart metering and smart grids to the future of energy markets and an understanding of the consumer benefits are desirable; and existing relationships with the energy and ‘smart’ communities preferable.
Examples of current directives that ESMIG is involved in, of the type expected to be dealt with by the advisor, are as follows:
- Energy Efficiency related directives
- EuP/ErP (Energy usage) directive
- WEEE/RoHS (waste and hazardous substances) directives
- Guidelines and regulations for Smart Grids and Smart Metering
The ESMIG team consists of Brussels, and non Brussels based members, so any candidate should be able to demonstrate team working skills, and the ability to use all available electronic tools to achieve this. In addition, working in an association environment requires a number of key skills:
- Understanding key strategic issues for the industry
- Translating political and Commission documentation and views into usable information for all members
- Negotiating with members to develop industry positions
- Delivering agreed positions back to the European institutions
The candidate will work under direct supervision of ESMIG's Managing Director and in close co-operation with our full-time Junior Adviser in our Brussels office.
