3rd Parliamentarian Dialogue Europe-Latinamerica on Energy and Sustainable Development

20Sep
2000

Following a brief presentation of the EEF, our President, Rolf Linkohr, explained that, for the last ten years, the debate on energy in Europe had focused on liberalisation and the setting up of the European market for electricity and gas. We are currently preparing for another phase which is linked to ecology.

Ratification of the Kyoto protocol would change both European and world policy. Europe and Latin America thus have a common goal and we hope that this 3rd. dialogue will help develop contacts between the two continents.

Rolf Linkohr then gave the floor to Javier Basagoiti González-Trevilla, director of institutional relations at Iberdrola, who pointed out that this type of meeting, which makes it possible to strengthen relations between Europe and Latin America, is very important as far as Iberdrola is concerned.

Iberdrola’s presence in Latin America extends to a number of sectors, but Javier Basagoiti stressed the fact not enough has been made of the relationship between Europe and Latin America. Iberdrola is willing to help Europeans to promote and support activites aimed at strengthening the economic relations beteen Europe and Latin America.

A free discussion then developed between those attending the official conference and the EEF members, both Parliamentarians and industrialists, present at the cocktail.
