New Risks and Challenges in Security of Energy Supply: How can Europe be assured of the Oil and Gas it needs?

Speakers: Coby van der Linde, Clingendael International Energy Programme (CIEP), and Norbert Liermann, OGP

European citizens want assurance that their energy supply will be secure and affordable in the years and decades to come. Dependency on oil and gas is perceived as a challenge or even as a threat.

Although we can reduce this dependency, we know that we will continue to rely on hydrocarbons for the foreseeable future.

Coby van der Linde and Norbert Liermann will shed some light on today’s risks and challenges in finding, extracting, transporting and bringing oil and gas to market. They will address and stimulate debate on key issues, such as:
• What are the main geopolitical developments and their implications for foreign energy policy?
• How is demand and supply going to evolve both in developed and developing countries? Will they compete for oil and gas supply?
• What investment climate do we need inside and outside Europe to find, extract and transport enough oil and gas to meet European demand?
• What contribution can market liberalisation and regulation make to security of supply?

Ms van der Linde and Mr Liermann drew on conclusions of a conference to be held by the European Policy Centre (EPC) and CIEP on Tuesday, 31st January 2006, on European Energy Supply Security.
