Nuclear energy in the European Union – contribution to EU policy objectives, challenges and perspectives

25Nov
2014
Dinner debate in Strasbourg

Speaker: Raphael Berger, Senior Vice-President Strategy, AREVA

Intervention by Gerassimos Thomas, Deputy Director-General, DG ENERGY

  • Half of CO2-free electricity generated in the EU is nuclear (Enerdata, 2013)
  • Nuclear energy plays “an important role in energy security” (European Commission, 2014)
  • “Nuclear power is currently supporting around 250,000 direct jobs in the EU” (European Nuclear Energy Forum / European Commission, 2011)

What does it take to maintain and enhance the contribution of nuclear energy, as a competitive low-emission baseload source of electricity, to the renewed EU energy and climate objectives?

Raphael Berger, Senior Vice-President Strategy, will present AREVA’s view on the contribution of nuclear energy to the EU policy objectives and reflect on the challenges and perspectives for the EU nuclear industry in view of the approval by the European Commission of the agreements to build two new nuclear reactors (EPR TM) at Hinkley Point C in the UK.
