Reducing CO2 content of Transport fuels – aspirations and reality
Speaker: Mrs. Isabelle Muller, Secretary General of the European Petroleum Industry Association, EUROPIA.
Climate Change and the need to reduce CO2 emissions have been firmly put on the agenda of worldwide debates and EU legislation (20% target of GHG emissions reduction by 2020). Transport emissions which account for approximately 26% of EU-25 emissions – have been increasing over the last 15 years and are predicted to continue to increase in the future – warrant particular attention. It is widely accepted that this would require an integrated approach with simultaneous actions from the car and truck manufacturers, the fuel producers, the vehicle owner (driver) and the transport infrastructure operators.
In this context, the reduction of carbon intensity of Transport fuels is put forward. This briefing lunch examined the available options and the constraints around this proposal from the perspective of the oil industry and provided an opportunity for a discussion with experts from the industry, to draw on their expertise and explore policy options.
