Dinner debate in Brussels

Speaker: Frank Hyldmar, President of ESMIG.

The introduction of Smart Meters in Europe is in full progress with a majority of countries having implemented or being about to implement a legal framework for the rollout. At the same time, the topic continues to generate heated debate regarding privacy and security with different dynamics emerging in the individual EU member states.

ESMIG, the European Smart Metering Industry Group, says that European harmonisation on privacy and security requirements and certification would increase interoperability and trust, improve time to market and economies of scale benefiting all stakeholders.

The dinner debate provided a platform allowing an exchange of views on the challenges experienced and the industry perspectives regarding Smart Meter-related privacy, data protection and security issues. Smart meter policy makers and industry representatives shared their views on how data protection and security will be paramount for the further development of services and solutions that fit consumer needs.
