Since energy is a technology dependant sector, a fundamental part of the answer to Europe’s energy challenges will come from technology. Technology enables a more efficient production and use of energy. In this sector, however, it takes many years to bring technological innovation on stream.

The aim of the proposed European Strategic Energy Technology Plan is to accelerate innovation of energy technologies, and subsequently push the European industry to turn the threats of climate change and security of supply into opportunities to increase its competitiveness. This requires a new approach, which is more strategic, and which optimally integrates European capabilities in the way energy technology is developed, brought to market and used.

The European Union has three main objectives in the development of its energy technology: to lower the current cost of renewable energy, to facilitate the efficient use of energy and to place European industries in a leading position in low carbon technologies.

Göran Svensson will tell us how making use of the market opportunities and creating frameworks that stimulates industry to develop efficient technologies will be the key for success.
