Members of the European Parliament, APAs, representatives of the European Commission and EEF Members visited a geothermal district heating and cooling development site for the Be.SHARE project, in collaboration with EEF Associate Member Euroheat & Power. Supported by the European Union, the project aims to develop a carbon-neutral network right at the heart of Brussels, serving a neighbourhood combining office towers with areas characterised by a high share of social housing.
Opened by Tsvetelina Penkova MEP, EEF President, and moderated by Luca Neumann, a panel composed of Kurt Custers, Aurélie Beauvais, and Vincent Vandernoot shared insights into the Be.SHARE project, being developed in Brussels’ North District. They explained how district heating and cooling networks can make use of renewable energy sources, including geothermal energy and wastewater, to provide heating and cooling while contributing to energy security, decarbonisation and affordability.
The visit continued at the project site at Parc Maximilien, where the delegation was welcomed by Frederik Ceulemans, Alderman of Urban Renewal, Climate, Citizen Participation and Dutch-language Affairs of the City of Brussels. Participants had the opportunity to explore the planned infrastructure and learn more about the project’s development.
The visit also featured interventions from Donald Gilbert, Guillaume Lambin, and Gaetan Gillet, who presented the contribution of their respective organisations to the project and shared further insights into its evolution.
Thank you to Euroheat & Power, all speakers and participants for their engagement and for making this visit an insightful exchange on the role of geothermal energy and carbon-neutral networks in Brussels.
