Ensuring security of supply at an affordable price is crucial for our citizens and constitutes a core aim of TSOs’ mission and daily work. Markets are central to achieving this.

However, the transition from a centralised and supplier-oriented to a distributed and variable power system creates new challenges for the real-time and long-term security of electricity supply. Markets need to be (re)designed and adapted to the challenges of the increased RES integration. How can we tap into new flexibility potentials through more regional and European cooperation?

Active and empowered customers will be central. This needs to be accounted for also in contingency planning and consumer protection mechanisms that could help prevent the risk of possible shortages in supply.

A strengthened legislative framework as proposed by the European Commission – including the Electricity Security of Supply Directive and the Electricity Directive on Common Rules for the Internal Market and the RES Directive – is therefore paramount in this context. But how should it be designed in order to effectively address current challenges for the power system?

ENTSO-E’s President, Peder Andreasen, presented and discussed ENTSO-E’s current perspective in this area.
