Towards a pan-European electricity market

Speaker : Rafael Miranda, President EURELECTRIC

EURELECTRIC has recently been looking in depth into the question of market development to identify how current markets could evolve into a true EU internal electricity market. Based on the state of play of different European wholesale markets, EURELECTRIC proposes a roadmap for the development towards a pan-European wholesale market. The roadmap should develop on regional and European level in parallel as regional markets are seen as an intermediary step. The regional development must not create any new obstacles for the single European market. The document also lists the conditions which are essential for market-places and TSOs to meet in such a pan-European market. Eurelectric now strongly recommends concrete steps should be taken towards practical implementation of this roadmap and is therefore looking forward to the 2006 mini-fora (sub-fora to the Florence forum) where market development is to be discussed.

The timing of the dinner debate also coincides with the adoption of the yearly progress report on the implementation of the Internal Electricity Market (IEM) and Internal Gas Market (IGM) directives.
